Lagos Woman Brutalised For Filming Alleged Police Harassment

A Twitter user has demanded the release of a yet-to-be-identified woman who was allegedly assaulted by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command for filming them while harassing a commercial driver.

According to the Twitter user, the harassment was carried out by men of the command guarding the palace at Illasan, Lekki Phase 1 area of the state.

He alleged that the police arrested the woman while also asking if she has been released by the erring officers.

He tweeted, “@Gidi_Traffic Last week police men guarding the palace at Illasan, Lekki Phase 1, allegedly assaulted a lady for attempting to record them during a confrontation with a Uber driver. The lady’s phone was seized and she was also arrested. Has she been freed? @BenHundeyin @Princemoye1”

In his reaction, the Force Spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi promised that the incident will be investigated by the state command.

Adejobi said, “Well, Ben will need to investigate this and take necessary action. We will need to get more facts about this scene as the video is not long enough to deduce some things. PPRO Lag should detail the PCB to look into this and revert. It has been sent to necessary units to handle.”

Cases of police brutality are rampant in Nigeria, Africa’s largest democracy.

Most of the youths said they had a personal experience with the police or know someone who has.

In October 2020, Nigerian youths protested against police brutality under the banner of #EndSARS. This caused chaos in the country as the protesters alleged that soldiers were deployed to shoot at and kill some of their members in Lagos State.

The #EndSARS protest was carried out in most states across Nigeria, especially the southern part of the country.
