A 40-year-old housewife, Charity Upev, and her son, Tertsea, have been remanded by a Makurdi Chief Magistrates’ Court, Benue State, for alleged culpable homicide.
NIGERIACRIME gathered that the duo were remanded in a custodial centre on Tuesday.
Charity and her son, Tertsea, were charged son with criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.
The defendants pleaded not guilty, but Magistrate Roseline Iyorshe did not take their plea and adjourned the matter till February 8 for further mention and transferred the case file.
Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Inspector Jonah Uletu, told the court that on January 24, the Divisional Police Officer of ‘E’ Division Police Station, Makurdi, received information that Charity and her son beat up Fanen, her in-law living with her.
The prosecutor said Charity claimed that her in-law stole meat from her pot of soup.
The police said Fanen became unconscious as a result of the beating and was rushed to a hospital, but died while receiving treatment.

The offence, the prosecutor said, contravened sections 97 and 222 of the Penal Code Laws of Benue, 2004.
Meanwhile, the Veteran Organisation for Human Rights (VOHR), a human rights organisation, has expressed worries over the continuous cases of sexual molestation in the country.
Tunde Badmus, the President of the group, who disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Osogbo, also expressed sadness over the rape incidence that occurred at the Abayomi area of Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday.
Badmus, who said issues of sexual defilement and domestic violence in the country were getting out of hand, added that it had become necessary for governments at all levels to take drastic solutions to ensure such heinous acts were curtailed.
In his words, “An innocent young woman wearing purdah was attacked, raped, assaulted and mogged at Abayomi Area, Iwo Road, Ibadan and attempt to cover up the ugly incidence has generated a lot of concern for our organisation.
“The perpetrator’s father is well known and several attempts to cover up the morally repugnant and immorally obvious act are ongoing.”
“We want the whole world and other human rights bodies to know about this incident in order to ensure the victim gets justice,” Badmus said.
