Two Injured As Gunmen Attack PDP Reps Candidate In Lagos

The convoy of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the House of Representatives, Lagos Mainland Constituency, Segun Gbayi, has been reportedly attacked by yet-to-be-identified gunmen.

NIGERIACRIME learnt that the incident happened in the Makoko area, Yaba, Lagos on Thursday, leaving at least two people in the convoy injured.

There were reports that the heavily armed gunmen also attacked the security escorts attached to the convoy, opened fire and vandalised their vehicles.

The PDP candidate, however, narrowly escaped the attack unhurt.

In his reaction, Gbayi said the attempt to murder him is the work of his opposition, who wants to prevent members and supporters of the party from exercising their franchise in tomorrow’s election.

“This attack was violently carried out to discourage us from exercising our political franchise,” he said.

He advised voters and the general public to remain safe during this period and report any case of threat to lives, vandalisation, or violent attack to security officers.

Recall that the convoy of the Lagos PDP governorship candidate, Abdul-Azeez Adediran aka Jandor, was attacked in the Coker area of Aguda in the Surulere Local Government Area of the state in January 2023.

Some suspected hoodlums were said to have shot guns and destroyed some of the campaign vehicles in Adediran’s convoy during the attack injuring three persons.

Jandor, together with some party members and supporters, had a grassroots engagement with traders and other groups in the Surulere LGA shortly before the attack.

The Lagos PDP spokesperson, Hakeem Amode, had accused the APC of sponsoring thugs against Jandor’s convoy.

Amode’s statement read in part, “The APC sponsored thugs in Surulere local government of Lagos state unleashed violence on persons and groups of people in the area ahead of the scheduled visitation of the PDP gubernatorial candidate visit to the ward on Thursday and Friday, in continuation of Jandor’s tour of the 245 wards in Lagos State.

“The hoodlums went to the Baale of Ojuoluwa in Empire area of the LGA to threaten him not to receive the entourage who was billed to pay him a courtesy visit.

“The gates leading to the entire empire area was locked and vehicular movement around the area disrupted.

“In the same vein, the canopy and chairs arranged at Iponri Housing Estate was violently destroyed by APC killer-thugs who were armed with dangerous weapons including guns and many of our members who were making the arrangements was wounded in the fracas.”
