Soldiers Allegedly Kill APC Member In Cross Rivers, Detain Journalists

One of the soldiers at Ogoja in the northern senatorial district of Cross Rivers State have reportedly killed a member of the All Progressives Congress, identified as Joe, for creating a rowdy scene at the polling centre.

The incident happened early Saturday while voters were exercising their rights at the polling unit.

There were claims that the man shot was heard chanting, “APC must win this time”.

NIGERIACRIME reports that the deputy governorship candidate of the APC, Peter Odey, is from Ogoja, where the incident occurred.

According to an eyewitness account, the deceased was a popular commercial motorcycle rider in Calabar, who travelled to his hometown for the election.

His death has reportedly caused tension where rowdy scenes are being witnessed, according to sources in Ogoja.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Irene Ugbo, “that is the information we got”.

She said the soldiers were supposed to stay a distance away from the polling units.

Meanwhile, some journalists with Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) media cards and branded vehicles are being detained in a Bakassi community where they were travelling to cover the election.

One of the journalists, Ubong Umoh of Sparkling FM Calabar, said they and other journalists were detained by armed military men.

He said after a lengthy explanation, the military men still said they should have left as early as 5 am.

He said the military men claimed that they had orders from above to block the road.

There are allegations that foreign elements have invaded Cross River communities.

A former deputy governor of the state, Efiok Cobham, had told journalists that they got information that mercenaries were allegedly imported by some politicians.
