No fewer than 494 bags of dry blended NPK fertiliser were seized by the Adamawa-Taraba Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in the states.
The items, according to the command’s area comptroller, Salisu Abdullahi, were seized between May 1 and June 15.
While briefing newsmen at NCS headquarters in Yola on Friday, Abdullahi said two Toyota Starlet cars were also recovered.
Other items that were seized include 14,980 litres of petrol packed in drums and jerry cans, 90 bags of foreign parboiled rice, and 960 pieces of foreign soap intercepted at the Cameroon-Nigeria border.
The assorted contraband was valued at N22.8 million, the comptroller said.
Abdullahi further explained that the seized fertiliser was predicated on the restriction of the movement of the product, according to Section 10 of the National Fertiliser Quality (Control) Act 2019, which restricts the movement of fertiliser across the North-East states after it was discovered that insurgents were using components of the product to manufacture explosives.
The seized petrol, due to its inflammable nature and in line with Standard Operating Procedure, was instantly auctioned, the customs controller said.

Meanwhile, the Police in Kano State have confirmed that remnants of demolished buildings in Kano metropolis trapped some scavengers at Daula Hotel and Eid Praying Ground on Thursday.
Spokesman of the Kano State police command, SP. Abdullah Haruna Kiyawa made this known.
One hundred and six (106) suspected scavengers were arrested for criminal offenses of trespass, mischief, and theft.
He explained that despite several warnings by the Police Command to the scavengers, they still refused to avoid movement around those sites.
“Unfortunately, on Thursday, 15th of June 2023, at about 02:30 pm, there were reports that remnants of the demolished buildings collapsed and trapped some scavengers at Daula Hotel and Eid Praying Ground,” he said.
He said the Commissioner of Police also joined rescue workers from the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, and State Government officials where they were jointly briefed on some casualties with a high chance of fatality.
He commiserated with the families of the deceased and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
He advised parents and community leaders to warn their wards to avoid the sites for their good.
