A suspected cultist, Adeola Babatunde, has been remanded to the Kirikiri Custodial Centre by Chief Magistrate Patrick Nwaka of the Yaba Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State.
The suspect, who was charged with five counts of armed robbery, unlawful possession of arms and membership of an unlawful society, the Eiye Confraternity, was remanded for 30 days.
He was arraigned by men of the Lagos State Police Command.
According to the prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, the suspect, while armed with a gun, cutlass and other weapons, robbed one Ejike Uderwan of a handset and wallet containing his Automated Teller Machine card on July 21, 2023, at Ile- Iwe area of Ejigbo, Lagos.
Some passersby who witnessed the criminal activity, however, arrested Babatunde and handed him over to the police.
Three live cartridges and one expended cartridge were found in his room when his apartment was searched by the police.

According to Nurudeen, the crime committed is contrary to Section 296 and punishable under Sections 299, 297, 411, 42, and 330 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.
The charges read in part, “That you, Adeola Babatunde, and others now at large, on July 21, 2023, around 3.30 pm, at Ile-Iwe area of Ejigbo, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, while armed with a gun, cutlasses and other weapons, did rob one Ejike Uderwan of handset and wallet containing his Automated Teller Machine card and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 296 and punishable under Section 297 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.
“That you, Adeola Babatunde, and others now at large, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district, you were found to be a member of the dreaded Eiye Confraternity which is an unlawful society terrorising the members of the public and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 42 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.”
Though the charge was read to the defendant, his plea was not taken.
After ordering that he should be remanded for 30 days to allow the police to conclude their investigation, Nwaka adjourned the case till September 6, 2023.
