I saw her chest open, blood was gushing out —husband of lawyer shot by policeman

Gbenga Raheem, the husband of Barrister Omobolanle who was shot dead on December 25th by a policeman attached to Ajiwe Divisional Police has revealed that he saw his wife’s chest open and blood was gushing out after she was shot by a policeman.

While recounting the incident that lead to his wife’s death, Gbenga Raheem said “on the 25th of December 22, I woke up with my wife and children, my niece and nephews that came to spend the holiday with us, so we went to church in Ikoyi.”

“Because my church in Ikoyi was doing a programme so we decided to go to a nearby church, we went to a church, we finished service then my wife said it is Christmas day let’s take everyone out.”

Explaining further Gbenga Raheem said so we went to Alibaba supermarket near Abraham Adesanya we got ice cream there, and from there we went to Domino pizza, near Thomas Estate. We had our pizza and ice cream from there we headed towards Ajah to do u-turn to come back to Abraham Adesanya when we did the u-turn, we saw policemen stopping cars, as we approached them, they said we should stop, in the process of that, we just heard a loud sound on my wife’s side window all of a sudden I saw her chest open and blood was gushing out immediately I ran out my sister in law that was also with us ran out to the policeman and he worked his gun on her, talking to him was pointless so I ran back into the car to see if anything could be salvaged on my wife, I saw her gasping for breath by that time my sister in law had brought the policeman into the car to the front seat so we headed to Budo Specialist Hospital on getting there we brought her out, and they said they couldn’t handle it, and that we should go to Doren hospital, we went to Doren hospital and they tried to put bandages and cotton wool on her chest, they asked what happened I said the police shot her, and they are here, they were trying to put oxygen because she said she couldn’t breathe. They tried to put syringe in her hand too.

The nurse eventually said that since it is a bullet thing, they can’t handle it and that we should take her to Grandville hospital, which is in VGC, I took her there on getting there they declared that she was no more.”

“The police people carried her body and put her in their truck, and they wanted me to follow them, but I said, I need to go and settle my children because I asked them where are my children, they really didn’t know because the last was when I dropped them off at Budo hospital so I went back to organise them to get them to the house. One of my neighbours saw me on the road, so he helped me to take them to the house, so I got back to the police station and then my friends and neighbours came around and wanted to pray for the body we realised they had taken her to the mainland we had to go to the mainland.”

It will be recalled that Barr Omobolanle Raheem was shot dead on December 25th by a policeman attached to Ajiwe Divisional police.

However, on the instruction of the Commissioner of Police, the errant officer has since been taken into custody alongside his team members. The CP has equally directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba for in-depth investigation.
