14 suspects arrested over murder of village head in Niger state

Operatives attached to Niger state Police Command have arrested fourteen suspects over the killing of the Village head of Lambata, Alh Mohammed Abdulsafur.

Some of the arrested suspects are: Umar Ilyasu Sarki age 37, Musa M. Musa, age 47, Yakubu Bissala age 23, Hussaini Mohammed age 18, Usman Habibu 40, Ibrahim Umar 45, Ismaila Mohammed 38, years, Ademola Okunola 51 years, Ilyasu Dantani 28 years, Yakubu Mohammed 35 years, Yusuf Sarki 49 years, Atiku Mohammed 21 years, Adamu Yusuf 46 years and Bashir Mohammed 27 years.

NigeriaCrime.com gathered that irate youths had stormed the residence of the village head two weeks ago and inflicted serious injuries on him and his younger brother, Ibrahim Mohammed for inexplicable reasons.

While the village head was later confirmed dead in the hospital, his younger however escaped with fatal injuries.

Based on the attack, Police operatives led by Area Commander Suleja who swung into action immediately to unravel the cause of the violence conducted a house-to-house search of the area during which some of the suspects were arrested.

Confirming the arrest, the Spokesman of Niger state Police Command, DSP Wasiu Abiodun said the suspects have made some confessional statements over the incident.

“During interrogation, the suspects confessed that there has been a lingering issue of chieftaincy tussle between the late village head and Umar Ilyasu Sarki who claimed that the thirty-seven District heads (Mai-Angwa) in the community are loyal to him and that they did not recognize the late village head as their leader.

“Furthermore, the suspects mentioned other members who participated in the act as Hamza Umar Sarki, Dauda Umar Sarki, Abdulkarim Dantani, Zubairu Moh’d, Zayanu Ladan, Jibril Garba and others presently at large,” the Police added.

DSP Abiodun said “effort is ongoing to arrest fleeing members of the group as the investigation is being intensified while the suspects will be arraigned in court for diligent prosecution.

In a related development, another set of nineteen suspects has been arrested for burning down Kafin-Koro Police station in protest over the gruesome killing of Catholic Reverend Isaac Achi.

During the protest, the rampaging youths conspired amongst themselves and invaded Kaffin-Koro Police Divisional Hdqtrs with dangerous weapons such as sticks, stones, bottles, large quantities of PMS (petrol), and other weapons and without any provocation from the Police who were even ready to protect them for a peaceful protest the youths proceeded to the station and set the Divisional Hdqtrs building ablaze where four motor vehicles and ten motorcycles were burnt, including valuable public documents in the office.

During interrogation, the irate leader Abdulkadir identified all the suspects who were part of the crime, and equally mentioned about twenty-eight other suspects who are presently at large.
