Court Sentences Kano Man To Death By Hanging For Killing Stepmother

A 29-year -old man, Sagiru Abdullahi, has been sentenced to death by hanging for killing his stepmother.

NIGERIACRIME learnt that the sentence was handed over to the convict by the Kano State High Court on Thursday for stabbing his 55-year-old stepmother, Zainab Dan’Azumi, to death.

In the judgment, the court convicted Abdullahi on one count of culpable homicide.

The prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt, the presiding judge, Justice Aisha Mahmoud, said before she sentenced and convicted Abdullahi to death.

During the court sessions, the prosecution counsel, Mr Tijjani Ibrahim, had earlier told the court that Abdullahi committed the offence in June 2014 at Kurmawa Quarters in Kano.

According to the prosecution, Abdullahi left several machete cuts on the victim’s head, which later led to her untimely death.

“The victim was rushed to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, where she was confirmed dead by a doctor,” he said.

Meanwhile, the police in Kogi have vowed to uncover the cause of the explosion that rocked the palace of the paramount ruler of the Ebira people, The Ohinoyi, on Thursday.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Williams Ovye-Aya, who confirmed the incident, described it as “very unfortunate and shocking.”

Ovye-Aya said the police were on top of the situation as security operatives had already sealed up the area.

He said an investigation into the explosion had begun.
