Cybercrime: NYSC member bags two years jail term

A high court sitting in Ilorin, Kwara state has convicted a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for offences bordering on internet fraud.

The convict was identified as Christopher Adetuberu, serving in Ogbomosho, Oyo state.

The court handed down the verdict during a sitting on Thursday.

The Ilorin zonal command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had secured the conviction of Adetuberu. Ibrahim Yusuf, the presiding judge, said Adetuberu, 28, is guilty of the two counts of cyber-crime against him.

Yusuf sentenced the defendant to two years imprisonment with N200,000 as an option of fine.

He added that his conviction would serve as a deterrent to others.

The court also ordered the forfeiture of a three-bedroom flat acquired with the proceeds of the illegal activities.

Other items forfeited include a Lexus car, different brands of cellphones, a laptop, as well as the sum of N921, 535.49 found in his bank account to the federal government.

Adetuberu, who is an indigene of Ilesha, Ilesha West LGA of Osun, was arrested at Ogele area of Eyenkorin, Ilorin.

The convict had in the course of investigation revealed that he ventured into “yahoo yahoo business” in 2016.

He said he had among other things built a house with the proceeds of the illegal activities.
