EFCC Rearraigns Suspected AGF, Other Accused Of Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) has rearraigned the suspended Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris, on a 14-count charge bordering on stealing and criminal breach of trust to the tune of N109.5b.

The embattled AGF was rearraigned before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama, Abuja alongside other suspects on Wednesday.

The other defendants are Olusegun Akindele; Mohammed Usman and Gezawa Commodity Market and Exchange Limited.

Idris was brought before the new judge of the court, Justice Yusuf Halilu.

They were first arraigned on July 22 before a vacation judge, Justice  Adeyemi Ajayi  on a 13-count charge bordering on misappropriation to the tune of N109.5 billion.

However, upon the resumption of the court, the case was transferred to Justice Yusuf Halilu.

They pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to them on Tuesday, following the defendants’ lead lawyer, Chris Uche (SAN) applied that they should be allowed to continue to enjoy the earlier bail granted them by the former judge on July 28.

Uche said the defendants have dutifully complied with their bail conditions.

The EFCC Counsel, Oluwaleke Atolagbe, did not object  to the application.

He, however, left the decision to the court to exercise its discretion.

Justice Halilu ruled that bail is a constitutional right of a defendant.

The judge added that having been previously granted bail by the court, he is favourably disposed to allowing the defendants to remain on the early bail granted them by the court.

The judge added that if the documents are with the prosecution, it should pass same to the registrar.

Justice Halilu adjourned the case until Nov.  23 for hearing.
