Two persons are feared dead as fire razed part of the Embassy of Canada building in Abuja on Monday.
NIGERIACRIME learnt that the fire was caused by the Embassy’s power generating plant during repairs.
The fire was said to have begun around 11:30am on Monday, and the members of staff and vehicles have been evacuated from the building.
Officers of the FCT Fire Service were seen trying to put out the fire.
Confirming the incident, the Head of Operations of the FCT Fire Service, Amiola Adebayo, disclosed that two people were fatally injured beyond recognition in the incident, while about three or four other victims had been rushed to the hospitals.
“Yes, yes, it’s true. We have two fatally injured beyond recognition and the others in the hospital, either three or four,” he said.
Adebayo, however, did not state the cause of the fire incident or whether the affected victims were foreign expatriates or Nigerian citizens.
“It was actually an explosion,” a security source has declared in reaction to the raging inferno at the High Commission of Canada in Nigeria, maintaining that two people have already been confirmed dead.
Meanwhile, an Ikeja High Court on Monday arraigned one Ibrahim Damana for allegedly stealing a grey Lexus Rx350, worth N7 million.
Damana, whose address and occupation was not provided, is facing a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and armed robbery.
He pleaded not guilty to both charges.
The Lagos State Prosecutor, Mr Ola Azeez, told the court that Ibrahim, in company of others still at large, conspired to commit the robbery on July 17, 2021 around the Berger area of the state.
Azeez said that the suspect, with his conspirators, while armed with an AK-47 rifle, robbed one Osagie of a grey Lexus Rx350 worth N7 million, belonging to one Ogunsina Adeola.
The prosecutor, thereafter, applied for a trial date in view of the plea of the defendant.
He said that the offences contravened the provisìons of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Justice Oyindamola Ogala, after approving witness summons, adjourned the matter to Jan. 24, 2024 and Jan. 31, 2024 for commencement of trial.
