Ibadan: UI Professor Killed By Suspected Assassins

Gunmen suspected to be hired assassins have killed a professor at the University of Ibadan, Opeyemi Isaac Ajewole.

The incident reportedly happened on Monday evening while the don was returning to his home in the Moniya area of Ibadan.

NIGERIACRIME learnt that his corpse has been deposited at UI Anatomy.

The assailants took Ajewole’s car after killing him, a source in the university disclosed.

One of the friends of the deceased, Olukayode Ogunsanwo, also confirmed the death of the don on Tuesday.

The friend who was in a sober mood, simply said, “Yes. It is true. It is true”.

Also confirming the incident on Tuesday, Principal Assistant Registrar, Public Communications, at the university, Joke Akinpelu, said, “Yes, it is true. But we are not sure if thosw who killed him are armed robbers or hired assassins.

“He was killed yesterday. The incident happened yesterday”.

Ajewole, until his death, was a lecturer in the Department of Forest Resources Management of the university.

The late university professor was born on March 6, 1962.

In another development, the police on Monday arraigned 32-year-old Bello Ismaila before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate Court for allegedly receiving stolen cattle.

Police prosecutor Inspector Johnson Okunade told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 21, 2023, at 5 pm in Ogotun-Ekiti.

He alleged that the defendant received two stolen cattle from one Abdulkadri Buba, an offence that he said contravened Section 343(1) of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State 2021.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him, while his counsel, Toyin Oluwole, urged the court to grant his client bail.

In his ruling, Chief Magistrate A.O. Adeosun granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.

He subsequently adjourned the case until June 13.
