Two persons have been confirmed dead, while four construction workers are still trapped underneath the debris of an uncompleted seven-storey building at Oba Abiodun Oniru Street, Oniru Estate, Lekki, Lagos.
The building which is undergoing construction collapsed at about 3 am on Sunday.
NigeriaCrime.com learned that because of the structure of the building, a heavy-duty equipment excavator is required for the rescue of the trapped victims.
According to The Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu disclosed that “Upon arrival at the scene of the incident, an uncompleted 7-story building undergoing construction was found to have collapsed.
“No injury was sustained however about six people are reported to be trapped under the rubbles of the collapsed structure.”
Explaining further, Oke-Osanyintolu said the Agency’s heavy-duty equipment excavator will be required for the rescue of the trapped victims. We have activated the Lagos State Response plan. Operation still ongoing, he added.”
Confirming the building collapse, the spokesperson of Lagos State Police Command SP Benjamin Hundeyin said at about 3:30 AM on August 4th, 2022 the command received a distress call that a 7-storey building under construction at Oba Abiodun Oniru Street, Oniru Estate Lekki, allegedly collapsed and trapped workers therein.
Based on the report, combined teams of policemen LASEMA, NEMA, and other emergency management agencies were quickly mobilised to the scene for rescue operation so far two of the victims were brought out dead and corpses were deposited at a public morgue for autopsy.
“Search and rescue operation is being intensified, Hundeyin added.
