Kaduna Man Jailed For Stealing Generator

A 25-year-old man, Bala Hassan, has been jailed for 10 months for stealing a generator set worth N450,000.

The defendant was sentenced on Tuesday by the Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to the charge and begged the court for leniency.

The prosecution counsel, Chidi Leo, told the court that on June 23, Hassan and one other at large, conspired and stole a generator valued at N450, 000 belonging to the complainant at Badarawa Kaduna.

The defendant admitted to committing the offence during the police investigation but he couldn’t provide the generator.

Leo said the offences contravened Sections 302 and 217 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.

The Magistrate, Mr. Ibrahim Emmanuel, while delivering the judgment, held that the defendant was being convicted and sentenced based on his plea of guilty to the offence.

“The court having found the convict guilty of the offence, in line with his plea for mercy, a first time offender, who did not waste the time and resources of the court.

“Bala Hassan is hereby sentenced to 10 months imprisonment with an option to pay N20,000 fine, the magistrate said.

He said the judgement would serve as a deterrent to those who would want to indulge in any criminal act.

Emmanuel, however, ordered the convict to pay a compensation of N450,000 to the complainant, Mohammed Danladi.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors has revealed the reason for the flood at the Trademore Estate in Abuja.

The President of NIS, Surv Ibitoye Olomolatan, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists on the outcome of this year’s Annual General Meeting of NIS in Abuja last week.

Recall that on Friday, several buildings collapsed due to flooding at Trademore.

Reacting to the damage in Trademore Estate Abuja, he opined that the government should not have approved the location of the building since it is at the top of the water.

He urged Nigerians to always do due diligence before acquiring properties in certain locations to avoid the trademore experience.

“The terrain of where houses are built is determinant to flooding. When you have low land close to water drainage or a channel, the water tends to settle in the nearby land after heavy rainfall, and any building within will suffer.

“That is why in our last AGM, surveyors gathered to proffer solutions and discovered that Nigeria needs to be proactive about solving flooding problems. The building should not be where we have low land or the altitude is at the same level as the drainage system; if they are almost at the same level, the risk of flooding is imminent. Only surveyors can determine a flood-prone environment,” he stated.
