The Theatre Command Operation on Thursday night revealed that a Soldier ran amok in one of its military bases, opened fire and killed a humanitarian staff of an NGO and also killed another soldier in the same base.
Not satisfied, the soldier also opened fire on the co-pilot of one of the UN helicopters to the theatre before troops of Hadin Kai neutralised him.
Confirming the development, Major Samson Nantip Zhakom, Assistant Director, Army Public Relations. Headquarters Theatre Command said, “The Theater Command, Hadin Kai regrets to inform the public of a sad occurrence at one of our military base today.
“A soldier shot and killed a staff of one of the NGOs providing humanitarian support in the North East.
“Same soldier also killed another soldier and injured the co-pilot of one of the UN helicopters.
“Own troops on the ground immediately neutralized the errant personnel.
“The injured co-pilot has been stabilized while the corpses of the deceased have been moved to the 7 Division Hospital.
“Detailed investigation into the incident and subsequent remedial actions have commenced into the highly regrettable incident.
“Further details will be provided later.”
Reacting to the multiple gunshots, and killings at the Military base, the District Head of Damboa Local Government Area, Zanna Lawan Maina said, “I am in Abuja before I received a distress call from some of my subjects that there were multiple gunshots at Military Base.
“It is very unfortunate, but right now the situation is under control “. The Traditional Ruler stated.
It will be recalled that a few days ago a corporal in the Nigerian Army, Abayomi Ebun, crushed to death the Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre, NAFRC, Director of Finance, Brig.-Gen. A. O. James, with his car.
It was gathered that the incident happened at the NAFRC Old Barracks, in Lagos.
Cpl. Ebun, who works at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, NARC, knocked down the NAFRC Finance director while driving out of the Barracks.
Immediately after the incident, the senior officer was swiftly evacuated to the NAFRC Medical Center, where doctors at the Centre confirmed him dead.
