Ondo Men Beat Naval Officer To Death, Remanded

Two men have been remanded by an Ondo State Chief Magistrate’s Court, sitting in Akure, for allegedly killing a naval officer, Samson Akingbagbohun.

The suspects, Ayomide Sambo and Johnson Adeleke, were arrested by men of the state police command.

NIGERIACRIME learnt that the defendants allegedly beat the officer to death at Ido Ani in the Ose Local Government Area of the state after an argument.

The police dragged them before Chief Magistrate Musa Al-Yunus on two counts of conspiracy and murder.

The offences contravened sections 319, 316 and 342 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State, Nigeria 2006, the police prosecutor, Inspector Nelson Akintimehin told the court.

According to Inspector Akintimehin, the offences were committed around 7:40 pm on June 26, 2023 by the defendants and others at large committed.

Akintimehin stated that the defendants brutally beat the victim with an iron rod, planks, and stones, targeting his head, chest, and testicles.

He urged the court to remand the defendants in the Olokuta Custodial Centre to enable him to forward their case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The defence counsel, Tolulope Adebiyi, however, prayed the court to grant her clients’ bail.

Adebiyi specifically highlighted that the third defendant, 17-year-old Shagari, is underage and should not be subjected to trial in an adult court.

Furthermore, Adebiyi informed the court that the second defendant, Sambo, is a sickle cell patient.

She emphasised that if remanded, Sambo would be deprived of necessary medical care. As a result, she requested the court to grant him bail, ensuring his access to the required medical attention.

In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Musa Al-Yunus, remanded the two defendants.

The court, however, admitted a third defendant, Francis Shagari, to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The case was adjourned till August 1, 2023, for mention.
