Osun Man Assaults Policeman, Remanded By Court

A 27-year-old man, Taofeek Ahmed, has been remanded by an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun State over allegations that he assaulted a police officer after failing to pay for doughnuts.

Ahmed was dragged before Magistrate Abosede Sarumi on Wednesday.

According to the prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Osanyintuyi, Ahmed committed the crime at Sabo Market, Ile-Ife on June 19 at 4 pm, while adding that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace.

“The defendant bought doughnuts worth N1,000 from one Miss Mary Afolabi without paying her. He assaulted the 17-year-old by slapping her when she demanded payment for the doughnuts,” the prosecutor told the court.

The defendant also snatched a purse containing N6,500 from Afolabi, and assaulted Sgt. Odusina Olawale with intent to resist lawful arrest.

The defendant also allegedly assaulted another person, Alaba Afolabi, by hitting her with his head and injuring her in the right eye.

Osanyintuyi told the court that the offences contravened the provisions of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun State, 2002.

The defendant, who did not have legal representation, however, pleaded not guilty to the six-count charge bordering on breach of peace, assault, snatching, and resisting arrest.

Magistrate Sarumi asked the defendant to formally apply for bail and ordered that he be kept at the Ile-Ife custodial facility pending the outcome of his bail application.

Meanwhile, an Area Court sitting in Jos on Wednesday sentenced an 18-year-old student, Abubakar Adam, to nine months in a Correctional Centre, for stealing a phone.

The Judge, Shawomi Bokkos, sentenced Adam after a summary trial following his guilty plea.

Bokkos, who sentenced the defendant to nine months in prison, however, gave him an option of N10,000 fine.

The judge also ordered the convict to pay N100,000 as compensation to the complainant.

He held that the judgment would serve as a deterrent to other would-be offenders.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported by the complainant, Habizu Hassan, on Feb. 20 at the “C” Division.

Gokwat alleged that the convict trespassed into the complainant’s room and stole his Samsung phone valued at N85,000 and sold it to Abdullahi Gambo for N13,000.

He said the offence contravened the provisions of the Penal Code Law of Plateau State.
