Port Harcourt: Newborn Baby Found In Dustbin

Members of a local vigilante group operating in the Diobu axis of Port Harcourt, Port Harcourt City Local Government Area of Rivers State have found a newborn baby that was dumped in a waste bin in front of Mile 3 motor park.

Speaking after the baby was rescued, the Chief Security Officer of Nkpolu Oroworukwo community, Godstime Ihunwo, disclosed that the baby was rescued on Friday morning, during their routine patrol.

The member of the vigilante group made it known that a Human Rights Activist, Prince Wiro and a female nurse were contacted for urgent medical attention for the baby girl.

He said, “While on routine patrol on Friday morning, 28 April 2023, at about 3am, I discovered a newborn baby who is less than 6 hours old.

“As at the point of discovery, the baby was still wrapped with cloths and placenta.

“I rescued the child and immediately called a female nurse for urgent medical attention for the baby. Upon inspection by the nurse, she discovered that the baby is a girl.

“I called a Human Rights Activist to my office, who accompanied me to Nkpolu Police station to make a formal complaint.”

Speaking on the development, the Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, Prince Wiro, urged pregnant ladies who do not want to keep their babies after birthing them to approach the relevant Government Ministry in charge of children.

Wiro said, “At about 3am this morning, the Chief Security Officer of Nkpolu Oroworukwo community, Mile 3 Diobu Port Harcourt, called me that he found a newborn with a placenta in front of Mile 3 park.

“We quickly went to Mike 3 Police Division to make a formal entry.

“The action of the unknown mother who left the baby to die is wicked and inhumane.

“I want to use this medium to advise young ladies that take in and are unable to take care of the child after giving birth, not to throw the baby away but seek help by approaching relevant government agencies that can take the child for proper care.”
