Property worth millions of Naira was destroyed on Thursday evening in Ikotun area of Lagos State during an explosion.
Nigeriacrime.com learned that the incident occurred at about 6.20 pm at 17, Obalabi Street, off Governor Road led to the collapse residential building.
Fortunately, there were no injuries nor loss of life as the occupants of the building were said to have escaped to safer places on noticing that fire has erupted from the penthouse of the building and this later resulted in an explosion which destroyed property worths millions of Naira.
It was gathered that firefighters from two different stations arrived at the scene immediately after they received the distress calls.
Adeseye Margaret, the Director, of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service who confirmed the incident to Vanguard said on arrival, the fire was met well alight but it was well attended to.
According to her, it resulted in an explosion due to the volatile furniture materials traded on the ground floor of the two-storey – penthouse building.
She said there was no loss of life despite that the building eventually collapsed. “The explosion from the chemical-induced materials consequently resulted in the collapse of the building,”
Damping down was ongoing at press time.
“Operational Firefighting is wrapping up as damping down progress with no record of casualty as occupants of the building are safe.
“However, an adjoining one-storey boys’ quarter building and two vehicles parked within the premises were saved among others while preliminary investigation is ongoing to unravel the cause of the Fire incident and will be made available to the public to forestall such occurrence in the future.”
It will be recalled that at the weekend, a 41 years old woman was reportedly burnt to death while a 50-year-old man was rescued when the inferno ravaged a building in Somolu area of Lagos State.
The incident occurred at about 03:18 am, at House 14, Bolaji Omupo Street, Somolu.
Adeseye Margaret, Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service who confirmed the incident attributed the cause of the incident to negligence, “Investigation, however, revealed negligence as the undercurrent cause that led to electrical upsurge when the power distribution company restored electricity to the area that ensued in the fire outbreak.”
