Rent Default: Landlady Bathes Tenant With Hot Water, Pepper

The alleged inability of a tenant, Imabong William, has led her landlady, Amaka Okonkwo to pour hot water mixed with pepper on her in Anambra State.

It was learnt that William was owing a new rent imposed on tenants in the building which made Okonkwo to issue her a quit notice.

William was said to have sought time to find a new apartment before her landlady poured hot water mixed with pepper on her.

The horrific incident happened in Enugwu-Ukwu community in Njikoka Local Government Area of the state.

The victim, an indigene of Akwa Ibom State, was rescued and rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment, sources confirmed.

Her landlady, Amaka, had also been arrested by the police after neighbours reported her action at Nimo Police Station.

Anambra State Commissioner for Women’s Affairs, Mrs Ify Obinabo, who visited the victim, narrated that the victim stated that she was asked to vacate the house over her inability to pay the new rent increment.

She explained that she demanded some time to enable her get a new place, but unfortunately, while she was washing her clothes on Thursday, the said landlady poured hot water mixed with pepper on her from behind.

Obinabo expressed her displeasure over the incident and promised to get justice for the victim.

She warned that the Anambra State Government will not take lightly anyone found culpable of assault of any kind and went on to advise the public to always report crimes and misdemeanours through the appropriate channels for quick intervention.

The Woman President-General of the community, Chiegbunam Nwosu, and Florence Okoye condemned the act, stating that the community is not in support of the dastardly act meted on the victim.

The women also visited Nimo Police Division where the DPO assured them that the case will be transferred to the state CID for onward investigation and consequently maintain peace and order in the community.

Upon interrogations, the husband of the suspect, Ebere Okonkwo, who was also seen at the hospital on Saturday, denied any involvement in his wife’s actions.

He stated that, although he was at home at the time of the incident, he was not aware of his wife’s intentions toward their tenant.
