Three nurses have been arrested over the missing organs of a newborn in Delta State.
The Delta State Police Command arrested the nurses after the family of the dead newborn laid a formal complaint.
The suspects worked at a a private hospital in Asaba, the state capital where they confirmed the baby dead on Sunday after he was rushed in for treatment by his parents.
The next day, the family reportedly brought back the child, alleging that his eyes, nose and ear had been removed.
A source at the hospital said, “The parents brought the child to the hospital on Sunday evening. Immediately, our children doctor (paediatrician) looked at the child and confirmed him dead after all efforts to bring the newborn back to life failed.
“The hospital discharged them and both the father and mother carried the child away. Surprisingly on Monday morning, the parents brought the baby, accusing the hospital of removing the baby’s eyes, nose and ears. They came with the police, who arrested some nurses at the hospital.”

Confirming the arrest of the medical workers, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, warned against organ trafficking.
He also said he does not have full details of the incident yet.
He said, “A month old baby suffering from a medical condition in Delta was taken to a hospital, (name withheld) for treatment, the child died on 9/10/22 in the hospital, when the parents came to take the body of the child to the mortuary, they discovered that the eyes and nose of the child has been removed.
“We got information that the child was delivered in another hospital, but was referred to the hospital where he died. The corpse has been deposited in a mortuary. Three suspects which include the nurses on duty have been arrested so investigation is ongoing.”
