2 dead, 15 rescued in Ikoyi boat mishap

Two persons have been confirmed dead while 15 others were rescued unhurt in a mishap involving a passenger boat on Wednesday, 21 February 2024.

It was learned that the boat was conveying seventeen passengers from Sandfil heading to Ikorodu when it capsized at powerline, Ikoyi link bridge.

According to the report, the driver of the passenger ferry Tee Ben departed from Addax jetty and colluded with a high-tension pole flooded by water.

It was gathered that among the two adults who lost their lives is a male and a female. While the body of an adult female was retrieved from the water, the search for the body of the adult male is ongoing.

Confirming the incident Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu PS Lagos State Emergency Management Agency LASEMA said: “The Agency responded to distress calls and upon arrival at the incident scene, discovered that a boat conveying (17) seventeen passengers from Sandfil heading to Ikorodu had capsized at the aforementioned location.

Explaining further, Oke-Osanyintolu said an investigation gathered from the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) officials revealed that the driver of the boat rammed into a high-tension pole flooded by water which led to the unfinished incident.

“Unfortunately, two adults lost their lives (a male and a female) and the other (15) passengers were unharmed.

“The body of an adult female was retrieved from the water and subsequently transported from the incident scene to LASWA head office at Falomo before being confirmed dead by the LRU paramedics.

“The adult female remains have been bagged and await the arrival of the SEHMU officials.

“The search for the body of the adult male is ongoing.

“The Agency responders alongside LRU Paramedics, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Waterways Authority and Nigeria Police Force were joint responders at the incident scene.
