A 40-year-old man, Michael Timothy, has been jailed for two years for N1.8m visa fraud.
His sentence was handed over by Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel of a Kaduna Chief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, without the option of a fine.
The convict had earlier pleaded guilty to the crime but the Magistrate ruled that Timothy’s sentence would be served consecutively and would act as a deterrence to others.
The prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo had earlier alleged that Timothy was collecting money by pretence from his unsuspecting victims.
Timothy, according to him, fraudulently acquired N1.8 million from Cynthia Cole with the promise of obtaining a Canadian visa for her.
He told the court the offence violated the Kaduna State Penal Code of 2017.
The prosecutor called four witnesses during the trial who informed the court how the convict committed the crime on February 20.
Ekiti State Police Commissioner, Ognndare Dare, has vowed to apprehend the perpetrators of a broad daylight bank robbery in Ikere-Ekiti on Wednesday.
In a press release late Wednesday via the command X account, Dare said he expressed “displeasure over the ugly incident” and has ordered a full-scale investigation to “ensure the perpetrators are trailed, arrested and brought to book.”
NIGERIACRIME reported Wednesday evening that three people were feared to have been killed in armed robbery attacks on two new-generation banks in Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
“I can confirm the killing of a man at one of the banks. He was shot in the head. The lifeless body was there until police arrived the scene and people dispersed. I heard that two others were shot dead at another place,” a source disclosed.
However, late Wednesday night, the police statement noted that “the Commissioner calls for calm and implores everyone to go about their lawful businesses as the command will not rest until the hoodlums are made to face the full wrath of the law.”
