Lagos Welder Helps Fleeing Suspect Remove Handcuffs, Arrested

A welder, Aliu Tijani, who helped a suspected cultist to cut off his handcuffs after escaping from police custody, has been arrested by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command.

The development was made known on Sunday by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin.

The police image maker disclosed the suspected cultist, identified as Wasiu Opeyemi, was earlier arrested in 2021, but escaped from police custody.

However, the suspect, according to Hundeyin, was rearrested by men of the command last week.

The PPRO, in a tweet via @BenHundeyin, stated, “Suspected cultist, Wasiu Opeyemi, escaped from police custody in August 2021 in handcuffs.

“Last week, he was re-arrested alongside Aliu Tijani, the welder who cut off the handcuffs when he escaped the first time.”

He added that the two suspects had both been arraigned and were currently in remand.

In another development, the traditional ruler of Ikaram-Akoko, in Ondo State, Oba Andrew Momodu, has blamed the Federal Ministry of Works for the incessant accidents happening in one of the major junctions in the town.

The monarch said the community had, on several occasions, approached the agency to construct speed breakers around the junction where accidents usually occur.

This follows the death of five people in a fatal accident that occurred in Ikaram-Akoko, in Akoko North-West Local Government Area of the state, on Sunday.

The casualties were recorded in an accident involving an 18-passenger Toyota Hiace bus with registration number DKA 256 XY.

An eyewitness, who identified himself as Niyi, claimed that the bus lost control when one of its tyres burst while moving at high speed.

Aside from those who died, other passengers reportedly sustained various degrees of injuries.

Rescue efforts were carried out by members of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ikare-Akoko unit, police officers from the Oke-Agbe Akoko Division, and people living along the axis.

Injured victims were taken to the emergency ward of the State Specialist Hospital, Ikare-Akoko, while the five dead bodies were deposited in the mortuary.
