Benue Police Launch Hunt Killers Of Justice Igbetar

Men of the Benue State Police Command have vowed to unravel the mystery surrounding the assassination of a retired Judge of the Benue State Customary Appeal Court, Justice Margaret Igbetar.

Gunmen suspected to be assassins had on Thursday killed the legal luminary at her residence in Makurdi.

The development was made known by the Benue Police Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, in a statement she made available to newsmen.

Anene disclosed that some arrests have been made and vital exhibits for comprehensive investigation recovered.

The statement read, “On 24/8/2023 at about 1530hrs information was received at ‘E’ Police Division Makurdi, that Justice Margaret Mary Igbetar (rtd) could not respond to calls and was nowhere to be found. Detectives were immediately deployed for investigation.

“A search conducted within her house at Wantor Kwange Street, Gboko road, Makurdi led to the discovery of her dead body in a pool of blood inside her kitchen. It was also observed that she had deep cuts on her back.

“Further investigation led to the arrest of one Aondohemba Joseph and recovery of exhibits for detailed investigation.

While commiserating with family and friends of the deceased, the Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, CP. Bartholomew Nnamdi Onyeka PSC (+) condemned the dastardly act, assuring of his commitment to unravel the mystery behind the death and bring perpetrators of this barbaric act to book.

The remains of the judge was discovered on Thursday by her son at her residence on 1, Wantor Kwange Street, opposite the School of Medicine, Benue State University, Gboko Road.

A source close to the family said by the time the corpse was found, it had started decomposing.

The source added that a case of murder was reported to the “E” Division Police Station, Makurdi.

“Her corpse seems to be decomposing at the time it was found, suggesting she must have been killed before Thursday,” the source said.
