Customs impounds contraband goods worth N12.5 billion

The Apapa Area 1 Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS on Thursday said impounded contraband goods with Duty Paid Value, DPV worth N12.5 billion during the same period under review.

NigeriaCrime.com gathered that some of the impounded contraband goods are unregistered medicaments such as tramadol and Codeine, processed and unprocessed wood, used clothing, ladies’ and men’s footwear, foreign per-boiled rice, tomato paste and vegetable oil.

Customs boss also said that the Command also said it collected a total of N790bn representing a 29.8 per cent increase compared to N609 billion collected between January and September 2021.

According to the Customs Area Controller, CAC of the Command, Yusuf Malanta, N181.5 billion was recorded as an increase between the same period in 2021 and this year.

The Apapa Customs helmsman also said that the Command is targeting a total revenue collection of N1.1 trillion by the end of this year.

According to him, “In the period under review, the Command has collected revenue to the tune of N790.6 billion. This shows an exponential improvement of N181.5 billion as against N609 billion naira collected in the corresponding months of the year 2021, representing a 29.8% increment.

“This remarkable achievement was made possible because of our officers’ tireless commitment to ensuring that all revenue leakages are being mitigated, as well as sustaining the level of compliance by the importers/stakeholders in the clearance value chain.”

He listed items seized by the Command to include “unregistered medicaments such as tramadol and Codeine, processed and unprocessed wood, used clothing, ladies and men’s footwear, foreign per-boiled rice, tomato paste, vegetable oil and other sundry items that fall under import and export prohibition list.

“At this point, let me reemphasize that Apapa Command is continuously ready to assist in facilitating legitimate trade and ensuring that all forms of smuggling activities through a false declaration on import/export done in defiance to extant trade guidelines will be detected through our layers of control mechanism,” he concluded.
