Female Soldier Killed Army Captain At Checkpoint In Adamawa

An army captain has been killed by a female soldier enforcing curfew at a checkpoint in Yola, Adamawa State.

Recall that Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State imposed the curfew after hoodlums broke into a government warehouse and looted several items, including palliatives meant to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy.

While enforcing the curfew, the female soldier identified as Lance Corporal Nkiru, reportedly shot a captain who attempted to intervene in her altercation with civilians.

According to reports, the military personnel the suspect had insisted that motorists, including workers on essential duty, coming home during the curfew hours must turn back when the incident happened.

“Some people stopped at the checkpoint explained themselves as workers on essential duties, but the female soldier insisted they must turn back. A captain came forward to intervene. Unfortunately, she had already cocked her rifle, so she just fired and killed him accidentally,” a security officer stated.

The victim was confirmed dead at the Federal Medical Centre, Yola, while the suspect was instantly arrested and whisked away by soldiers.

Similarly, sixteen people allegedly involved in kidnapping and armed robbery activities have been nabbed in Adamawa State.

The 16 were rounded up during security operations in parts of the state, mostly in Mubi North, Gombi, and Fufore local government areas.

This was disclosed on Sunday by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Suleiman Nguroje, who said the security operations were conducted by joint efforts of operatives of the police and local hunters.

“The operatives (of the Police) apprehended the suspects in a joint patrol with local hunters,” Nguroje said.

The police spokesman disclosed that six AK-47 rifles and other weapons were recovered from the suspects.

“On completion of investigation, the command will charge them to court for prosecution,” Nguroje assured.

He added that the state Commissioner of Police, Afolabi Babatola, particularly appreciated the local hunters for their role in arresting the suspects, and appealed for support from everyone to strengthen the police for greater performance.
