No fewer than 15 persons were killed and property worth N20 million destroyed in various fire incidents in Kano State in October, the state Fire Service disclosed on Thursday.

This was made known by the Public Relations Officer of the service in Kano, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, in a statement he signed.

The spokesman also said the service was able to save 24 lives and property worth N43.3 million from 35 fire incidents during the period.

He said that the service responded to 32 rescue calls and six false alarms from residents across the state during the period.

The complex, popularly called Art Deco, is where furniture materials, interiors, and electronics are sold.

According to witnesses, the inferno started around 1 a.m. and burnt for several hours, destroying goods worth several millions of naira before the firefighters arrived.

Confirming the incident, the Operational Commander of the Federal Fire Service in Osun, Isaac Adejobi, said his office was contacted around 2:30am after some residents battling to put out the fire had ran out of ideas.

He said, “We arrived at exactly 2:30am after receiving a distress call. The fire must have started earlier and no one called us until 2:30am. Our office is just about 2km away and we turned out immediately we got the call.

“People were fighting the fire on their own before calling fire service. It was when the fire was beyond their control that they called us.”
