Fisherman Killed As Gunmen Injure Farmers In Bayelsa

A 49-year-old fisherman have been reportedly killed by gunmen suspected to be herdsmen while he was working on his fishing camp in the bush in Bayelsa State.

The victim, Bob Wilson, was a native of Akumoni in the Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

It was learnt that the fisherman was shot at and killed on Monday.

Additionally, the assailants also shot at another farmer from the community identified as Nyekefamo Jimiro.

The victim, who sustained gunshot wounds is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

It was gathered that farmers and fishermen fled the bush after reports of armed attacks by herdsmen spread around the area.

Speaking on the incident, a youth leader in the Okordia clan, Akadumeme Raymond, indicted herdsmen in the state of being behind attacked the ended the life of the deceased because he stopped them from grazing on farmlands around his fishing camp.

Raymond, who described the killing as barbaric, noted that the corpse had been deposited at a mortuary.

He appealed to the state government to ensure that the killers are brought to book.

The spokesman for the state police command, Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident.

“Police detectives have visited the scene and evacuated the corpse to the mortuary for autopsy. An investigation is ongoing,” Butswat said.

Wilson’s killing happened barely one week after one Alexander Diri, a farmer, was murdered by suspected herdsmen in the neighbouring Zarama community and his corpse was discovered near the Zarama Market junction on the East-West Road.

The incident, however, sparked protest as some angry youths from the area mobilised to the scene and blocked the Zarama-Mbiama section of the East-West Road for several hours.
