The Senate Chief Whip, Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South), on Wednesday pleaded with protesters at the National Assembly to give the Senate one week to react to their demands.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and other protesters stormed the National Assembly earlier today to protest against the fuel subsidy removal, among other issues.
The protesters also asked the government to return the fuel price to N520/litre as against what it described as the arbitrary increase by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited to N617/litre.
As part of moves to stop importation, the labour unions demanded that the government immediately fix the refineries in Nigeria.
They further asked for a direct interface between the leadership of the unions and the President, as against a meeting with his Chief of Staff.
Responding, Ndume said there was already a motion on the floor of the Senate, co-authored by all senators, to address the issues surrounding the FG-Labour deliberations.

He urged the protesters to give the Senate one week to resolve the issues, after which the unions could embark on their proposed strike action if they were unsatisfied with the solutions offered.
In a different development, the Chairperson, Caretaker Management Committee of Fika Local Government Area of Yobe State, Halima Kyari Joda, has led security operatives to destroy 22 cartons of alcohol, and arrested 92 persons involved in operating a local brothel in the Ngalda community.
The joint operation, which was led by Joda, was carried out last Monday in Ngalda village and comprised the Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Hisba, and local vigilantes, among others.
The spokesman of the Chairperson, Abubakar Ayuba Idris, confirmed the development while speaking to newsmen.
“Ngalda town was well known for business and agricultural activities and that residents of the community have expressed their concern about how the situation is ruining their children’s education,” he said.
