Houses, schools submerged in flood as Lagos experience torrential rainfall

Several residential houses, schools and markets have been submerged in flood Lagos following the torrential rainfall currently being witnessed in Lagos State.

It was learned that the rain which started at about 11 am on Thursday is still on in most communities.

Some of the flooded communities are Ogba area of Ikeja, Agege in Alimosho area, Ekoro in Alimoso LGA, and Orile Agege Lagos.

Some schools like De Mato Nursery and Primary School located at Papa Ashafa, Markaz, Howo and Ayeni in Agege LGA, Orisumbare, Oke Ishagun and Isale Aborun in Alimoso LGA we’re also flooded.

Speaking on the development, Ibrahim Farinloye, Zonal Coordinator South West, National Emergency Management Agency, (NEMA) urged residents of Lagos State to take utmost precautions to avoid dangers as a result of torrential rainfall being witnessed presently.”

Farinloye advised School proprietors and teachers to keep the children under their custody till 30 minutes after the rainfall before the children should be released.

According to him, this is to safeguard the children from playing in the rainwater on their way home.
After the flashing flooding, which will not last beyond 30 minutes, it will be safe for the children to find their way home.

Farinloye also warned drivers to exercise patience as highways have been blocked.

“People should avoid taking refuge in a makeshift shelter as the place can be washed off by floods.
The Agency and other stakeholders are on the highways to monitor and respond to any distress situation that may arise,’ he noted
