Kano Court Jails 20-Year-Old For Stealing Fans

A 20-year-old man, Murtala Halliru, has been jailed for six months in a correctional centre by a Kano Shari’a Court for stealing 13 ceiling fans.

The court, on Tuesday, also ordered that the convict should be given 30 strokes of the cane.

It was gathered that Halliru lived at Gwammaja Quarters, Kano State.

The suspect pleaded not guilty.

Delivering his judgment, the presiding Judge, Nura Yusuf-Ahmad, sentenced the defendant, was brought to court on a count charge of theft, to six months imprisonment without the option of a fine and ordered that he should be given 30 strokes of the cane.

Furthermore, the judge orderd the convict to pay the sum of N44,000 as compensation for the ceiling fans.

The prosecution counsel, Aliyu Abideen, had earlier informed the court that the defendant committed the offence on February 23, at Kano State Polytechnic.

He said on the same date around noon, the Chief Security Officer of the polytechnic, Sani Suleiman, arrested the defendant in possession of two ceiling fans on his bicycle valued at N8,000.

“During the course of the investigation, the defendant confessed to having stolen 11 ceiling fans valued at N44,000 from the said polytechnic,” Abideen said.

He added that the offence contravened the provision of Section 133 of the Kano State Shari’a Law.
