NSCDC Seizes N64m ‘Ghana Loud’ On Lagos Sea

101 bags of suspected cannabis sativa worth N64 million have been seized by the Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Reports revealed that the hard drugs were intercepted on the high sea close to Ibeshe waters.

This was made known by the NSCDC Lagos Commandant, Okoro Eweka, who addressed reporters in Lagos on Friday.

According to Commandant, the illicit consignment was on its way to Nigeria and was ferried in a Cotonou boat by suspected Ghanaians.

He further disclosed that at about 2 am on Friday, the command’s anti-vandal team observed the traffickers following intelligence provided to the agency.

“On sighting the NSCDC gunboat, the occupants screamed and dived into the sea”, he said.

He continued that “Our team did not want to shoot but drove the boat to the defence jetty in Ijora at 11 a.m.”

The Commandant pledged that everything would be done to annihilate the inflow of drugs from neighbouring countries.

The official said the cannabis came into Nigeria from Ghana, as evidenced by the packing “in pawpaw and bible shape”.

“This Ghana species intoxicates highly and this is the reason they refer to it as ‘loud’ in local parlance,” he explained.

Eweka appealed to the Ghanaian government to discourage its nationals from flooding Nigeria with hard drugs.

He informed the public that the 9 Ghanaians arrested in February were prosecuted by the NDLEA and jailed on October 14.

The latest seizure would be handed over to the anti-narcotics agency, the security chief added.
