Passengers save 2-month-old baby from being sold in Lagos

…as police arrest suspects

Passengers on a commercial bus have saved a two-month-old baby, suspected to be stolen from being sold in Lagos.

Nigeriacrime.com learned that the passengers who noticed ceaseless crying from the baby questioned the woman (Okolie) carrying the baby in the bus for refusing to breastfeed the infant as it cried persistently.

When (Okolie) could not give a satisfactory response on how she got the two-month-old baby, the irate commuters pounced on her when they got to in Oshodi bus stop.

Confirming the incident, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, Police Public Relations Officer Lagos State Command said the suspect was about to be lynched when RRS operatives quickly stepped in to rescue her as well as the baby.

Explaining further, Hundeyin said that operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) on Friday, May 26, 2023, successfully foiled an attempt by two women to sell a two-month-old baby.

“The deal was uncovered in Oshodi when one Oge Okolie, aged 25, the intermediary between the mother of the baby and a prospective buyer was suspected of stealing the baby. Passengers on a public bus noticed ceaseless crying from the baby with Okolie and questioned why she could not breastfeed it if it were her biological child.”

“Preliminary investigations led to the arrest of the mother of the baby, Maria Ahmadu aged 26, ” he added.

Meanwhile, the Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi has since transferred the suspects and baby to the Gender Unit of the Command for further investigation and prosecution.
