Police arrest man for scamming POS vendor

A young man identified as Mustapha Usman has been arrested by the Gombe state police command for being in possession of fake naira notes and cheating an unsuspecting Point-of-Sale vendor.

Mahid Abubakar, state Police Public Relations Officer said this while parading the suspect at the command headquarters on Monday.

Abubakar said Usman deceived the vendor, Munir Mohammed, that the nylon in his hand contained naira notes.

The vendor, without knowing what was handed over to him, reportedly performed the transaction before he realised that Usman had scammed him with fake notes.

The police spokesperson said the supposed money turned out to be papers cut into currency sizes.

“Usman from Shagari Quarters Kano State at 11.30pm on July 27, 2022, defrauded one Munir Mohammed of Pantami, who operates a PoS. He reported to the Pantami division that the suspect came to his shop to ask that he should deposit N50,000 into an account and gave him two wrappers of counterfeited money, only for the PoS operator to discover that the two wrappers were not money but papers. We recovered the money (papers) as an exhibit,” he said.

The police also paraded was a 23-man gang, also known as Kalare.

Abubakar said the men were arrested for conspiracy and disturbance of public peace.

He said the 23 thugs were arrested by the police tactical team, revealing that they were caught around the Malam Inna area of the metropolis.

He noted that they would be charged to court upon the completion of investigation, stressing that the command had zero tolerance for thuggery.

“Some of the weapons recovered from them included 15 cutlasses, two daggers, one axe and five sticks,” Abubakar added.
