Police confirm abduction of traditional ruler, APC chieftain in Ondo

Police in Ondo State on Friday confirmed the kidnap of four Ikare-Akoko chiefs on Owo/Ikare Road on Thursday.

Gunmen had reportedly kidnapped Mikaila Bello, the Oniku of Iku quarters of Ikare Akoko, Ondo state and three others.

The incident was said to have occurred while the victims were travelling along Ago Panu axis of Owo-Ikare road, Ondo state, on Thursday evening.

The victims were said to have been heading for Akoko area from Akure, the state capital.

Others who were reportedly kidnapped include Yeye Gbafinro, former house of assembly candidate for Akoko north-east constituency; Bashiru Adekile, a community leader, and Adeniran Adeyemo, chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement on Friday, police spokesperson, SP Funmilayo Odunlami, said; “Police received a distress call at about 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 4 that gunmen shot at one Toyota Corolla car while on motion around Ago Yeye, on Owo/Ikare Road,”

“A bullet hit the driver in the head and the vehicle came to a halt, the other occupants numbering about four (identities unknown) were whisked into the bush while the driver was abandoned.

“The police have recovered the vehicle while the driver was taken to the hospital where he is currently in stable condition.”

The police spokesperson also said the police, local hunters and vigilantes in the area were combing the bush to rescue the victims and arrest of the assailants.
