A middle-aged man has been reportedly killed while another sustained serious injury in an ambush by suspected armed herdsmen at Ikobi community in Apa Local Government Area, LGA, of Benue state.
Nigeriacrime.com learned that Aminu Akanu was killed between Ikobi and Oloba around 6 pm on Monday.
A source in the area who preferred anonymity disclosed that the two victims were on their way home on a motorbike when they ran into an ambush between Ikobi and Oloba villages.
He stated that the deceased returned to the village recently from Lagos to see his aged widowed mother only to fall victim to the marauding armed herders.
He said: “One person, Aminu Akanu was killed between Ikobi and Oloba at 6 pm. We buried him about 11 pm last night.
“He came from Lagos recently to see his mother. His father a Police officer died some years ago. He went to the Local Government headquarters in Ugbokpo yesterday, Monday, February 19, 2024, to settle some things before coming to Ikobi and that was when he was attacked at Oloba.
“The herders shot him dead, the second victim luckily escaped with bullet wounds and he is receiving treatment.
“And as we speak the armed herdsmen have invaded Apkeke village and they are setting people’s houses on fire.”
Contacted, Chairman of Apa Development Association, ADA, Mr. Eche Ikobi confirmed the attack saying “One died on the spot while the other person escaped with gunshot wounds. He is receiving treatment as we speak.”
The lawmaker representing Apa Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Mr. Abu Umoru said soldiers had started repelling the invaders.
