Two drown as flood wreck havoc in Lagos communities

Two male adults have reportedly drown as flood wreck havoc in Iyana Ipaja and Command communities in Lagos State.

This came hours after nine female occupants of a storey building were rescued at Maryland where a storey building sank.

The incidents happened during the torrential rainfall which occurred across Lagos especially between weekend and Monday morning.

One of them, identified simply as Alfa was swept away when flood took over Ajayi Street, Olubodun Ifesowapo, Fafunwa, Ipaja West and Ti-Oluwani in Alimosho Local Government Area.

Alfa who initially escaped with his wife and four children was swept off when he returned to his house to pick some items.

NigeriaCrime.com gathered that while the deceased was swept off, the community members were able to rescued two other people who were with him.

Due to the incident, Alfa’s immediate family had been evacuated to stay with a relative.

Similarly, a yet-to-be identified adult male who missed his steps while walking on the Command bridge was also swept away by erosion before he could be rescued.

Confirming the incident, the Territorial Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye, said some communities in Lagos have been affected by flood and emergency operations were ongoing in those communities especially in Alimosho, Kosofe and Ifelodun Ajeromi areas.”

According to him, “about 35 buildings on Akinwumi Estate and 31 buildings on Arowojobe Estate and Ebun Otti Estate are seriously impacted.

In a related development, two persons have been confirmed dead as a boat carrying thirteen (13) occupants who were on transit from Dabi village to Siyangu village, in Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State capsized

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson, Jigawa State Police Command, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam said seven of the occupants in the boat were rescued out of which two died and remaining five hospitalised.

DSP Adam said the victims were rescued with the assistance of local divers while efforts were in top gear to search for the remaining six others who were still missing from the incident which occured on Sunday.

According to him, “Information at our disposal revealed that, at about 12: 40pm on 11th September, 2022, a particular boat with about thirteen (13) occupants who are on transit from Dabi village toward Siyangu village all in Ringim LGA reportedly capsized.

“Upon receipt of the report, a team of Policemen rushed to the scene.

“A search and rescue mission was launched with the assistance of local divers. The operation led to the rescue of seven persons on the spot and were all rushed to General Hospital Ringim for medical attention.

“Two out of the seven occupants found were certified dead by Medical Doctor.

“They are:- One Bara’atu Garba aged 30, and Mahmud Surajo aged 3. Their corpses were released to their relatives for burial.

“Five persons are still receiving treatment a the hospital while the other six occupants are yet to be seen.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that, the boat hit an object and broke down, as a result all the occupants were drowned in to the water,” DSP Adam added.
