UNICAL Shuts Library As Explosion Rocks Institution

The special education wing of the University of Calabar has been rocked with an explosion on Wednesday.

The cause of the explosion is yet to be ascertained as at the time of fielding this result, just as it was not confirmed if there were casualties.

NIGERIACRIME, was, however, informed that the University authorities quickly directed evacuation of students and staff for safety.

The explosion was confirmed by the institution’s Registrar, Gabriel Egbe, who said the Vice Chancellor, Prof Florence Obi, ordered that the Library be shut down immediately.

It was also directed that students should keep off the facility.

Part of the release states, “The decision to shut down the building is with immediate effect. The University librarian and chief security officer are to jointly ensure urgent and total evacuation of staff, students and properties out of the building as well as enforce the sealing of the structure.”

It could be recalled that the current management of the university led by Prof Obi had earlier declared a State of emergency on the same building.

Meanwhile, seven persons were arrested by the Kano State Police Command on Wednesday during a clash involving factional groups of hoodlums at the Rimi Market area of the state.

It was earlier claimed that a policeman was killed but SP Abdullahi Haruna, the State’s Police Public Relations Officer, debunked the claim, confirming that the policeman sustained injuries while in the line of duty.

The PPRO also explained that the policemen detailed to restore normalcy in the area arrested seven suspects involved in the clash.

He stated, “The police officer was injured at the Rimi Market in Kano State while discharging his official duty during a clash by two warring groups of thugs. Seven thugs were arrested during the clash.”

The state Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Gumel, he said, had ordered a discreet investigation into the case, stressing that the suspects would be charged to court after the completion of investigation.
