23-year-old woman arraigned in court for assaulting police officer

Timilehin Owoeye, a 23-year-old woman, was on Tuesday, arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

The police prosecutor, Insp Caleb Leramo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Dec.12 at about 01:00 pm in Ado-Ekiti.

Leramo alleged that the defendant assaulted and obstruct one Insp Odeyemi Oluwajube, in discharge of his lawful duty.

He alleged that the defendant slapped the officer three times while discharging their duty.

He said the offence contravened Section 187(b) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him study the case file and present his witnesses.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.

Counsel to the defendant, Mr Olatunde Olayemi, urged the Court to grant his client bail, with a promise that she would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Saka Afunso, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N25,000 with one surety in like sum.

He adjourned the case till Jan.10 for hearing.

In a related development, the police in Osun State on Tuesday arraigned Orji Kanu before a Magistrate Court in Osogbo for allegedly stealing a prepaid metre card.

NigeriaCrime.com gathered that Kanu was docked before Magistrate A. Ajala on two counts bordering on breach of public peace and theft.

Police Prosecutor, Fagboyinbo Abiodun said the defendant, on September 2, 2022, in Awosuru area of Osogbo, fraudulently stole a prepaid card belonging to Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

He added that the defendant also conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of public peace.

According to Abiodun, the offences are contrary to sections 249 and 390(E) of the state criminal law.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him.

Defense counsel, Eze Ngwoke in his oral application urged the court to grant the defendant bail in the most liberal terms, saying he will provide credible surety to guarantee his readiness to face trial.

Magistrate Ajala admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.
