Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command have neutralised some bandits who kidnapped no fewer than 16 people in some forests bordering Abuja and Kogi State.
The command also freed the 16 victims which were abducted earlier by the gunmen.
According to the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, the command acted based on the intelligence it gathered.
The police operatives were said to have stormed the forests on Sunday, January 1, 2023, due to reports they obtained that some persons were kidnapped in Anguwan Yango, Gulida, Chakumi, and Paikon Bassa villages in the Abaji area council.
According to a source, the heavily-armed bandits engaged the policemen in a shootout for hours, expressing delight that the operatives overpowered them and rescued 16 hostages from their den, as the bandits fled.

Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, stated that the rescued victims had already been reunited with their families.
“The rescued victims were taken to a hospital and afterwards reunited with their families,” she explained.
Meanwhile, the Kano Police Command says it is investigating a Chinese, Geng Quanrong over the killing of his girlfriend.
Geng, 47, it was gathered, had confessed to the killing of his ex-lover, Ummu Kulthum for jilting him.
Police spokesman, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa said the Commissioner of Police, Abubakar Lawal, ordered the case be transferred to the command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Homicide Section “for discreet investigation” Kiyawa.
Geng attacked Kulthum at her residence, with a sharp knife, inflicting deep cuts in her neck and other parts of her body, police said.
Late Kulthum was buried Saturday morning in Kano as the family members and friends mourned her sudden departure.
