Abuja Vigilante Group, Fulani Clash

There was tension as a group of Fulani boys and a vigilante group clashed in Yaba, Abaji Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Reacting to this deadly clash, the FCT Police Command said three people were badly injured.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, Josephine Adeh, in a statement released to pressmen on Sunday said, “On receipt of the report of a clash involving a vigilante group and the Fulanis, DPO Yaba mobilized to the scene where three vigilante members with various degrees of matchet cut injuries were rescued and rushed to Abaji General Hospital”.

According to her, a preliminary investigation into the incident revealed that the clash erupted as a result of unlawful impoundment of motorcycles belonging to the Fulanis.

“The situation was brought to control and normalcy restored. The incident is still under investigation by the Yaba Division”, the PPRO added.

A source in the area, however, disclosed that the clash, which occurred on Saturday, led to the death of one vigilante member, while about six others sustained various degrees of injuries.

Meanwhile, the Enugu State Police Commissioner, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has said that the ban on sale and unauthorised use of fireworks, commonly known as “knockout” or “banger,” is still in force in the state.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, on behalf of the commissioner said this in a statement on Sunday in Enugu.

Ndukwe quoted the commissioner as saying that the menace associated with letting off fireworks include: criminals using it to perfect their criminal intentions and creating tension.

He added that promoting fireworks could pose serious danger to human lives and property due to high tendency to cause bodily injuries and fire outbreaks, particularly during the harmattan.

He cautioned dealers and users of fireworks to refrain from it forthwith.

He added that “parents and guardians should discourage their children and wards from buying and igniting fireworks; violators would be made to face the full weight of the law.

“Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Heads of Tactical Units of the Command should ensure that the ban is enforced.”
