BREAKING: Court Grants Bail To Former CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele

A FCT High Court sitting in Maitama has granted bail to the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.

Terms of the bail by the Presiding Judge, Justice Olukayode Adeniyi, are that he should be released to his counsel, Matthew Burkaa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria who is to produce him for arraignment on 15th November.

In addition, Emefiele is to deposit his passport with the court as well as his other travelling documents

Justice Adeniyi noted that the fact that the applicant is scheduled to be arraigned, is speculative.

There must be an end to detention without trial.

Earlier today, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) produced Emefiele after the court ordered the anti-graft agency to either release the erstwhile boss of the apex bank who has been in detention since June 9, unconditionally, or produce him in court to be granted bail.

The former CBN Governor who dressed in yellow Babariga with a Hausa cap to match entered the courtroom around 12:30 with a retinue of EFCC operatives providing security around him.

His friends and relatives had besieged the court premises waiting for the arrival of the Judge for a hearing in his fundamental human rights suit.

Counsel to Emefiele, Mathew Burkaa, pointed out that his client has not been served any charge to date, assuring the court that the former CBN governor is not a flight risk and doesn’t have the capacity to stop his arraignment by the Federal Government next week.

Emefiele compelled the EFCC to free him from custody, pending the determination of his fundamental right enforcement suit and also prayed the court to equally award N5 million against the respondents for breaching his fundamental rights.

The embattled CBN boss was sacked by President Bola Tinubu a few days after he was sworn in.
