Lagos Doctor In Court For Involuntary Manslaughter Of Patient

A medical doctor identified as Oyeyinka Oyetunde, has been arraigned before an Ikeja Special Offences Court, Lagos State, over his failure to tend for a patient, who later died due to the sickness.

The doctor was charged for involuntary manslaughter of a patient.

According to the prosecuting counsel, Tola Esan, the crime was committed by the defendant on June 16, 2020, on 1, Ajibade Oke Street, Isolo, Ikeja, Lagos.

She told the court that the doctor failed to care for the patient, identified only as Uchenna.

According to the prosecutor, the offence is contrary to Section 229 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.

The defendant, who was arraigned on one count of involuntary manslaughter, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Upon his arraignment, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge. But Oyetunde’s counsel, Mr. Abayomi Omotunbora, in his bail application, prayed the court to allow his client to continue on the bail granted him by Chief Magistrate G.O. Abayomi of Ebute Metta Magistrate’s court.

Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe granted the request, noting that the defendant was not a flight risk going by his antecedents.

The court allowed him to continue on his bail, with a condition that he provides the evidence, for which he was granted bail, not later than seven days from the day he was arraigned.

The case was adjourned till December 19, 2022.
