Naira Crisis: Two Killed As Protesters Burn Delta Banks

At least two persons have been reportedly killed on Wednesday as angry bank customers protest the naira scarcity at the Udu Road area of Delta State.

NIGERIACRIME also learnt that the angry protesters also burnt three commercial banks, causing panic in the area.

According to eyewitness report, several other protesters sustained injuries during the violent protest.

The eyewitness, Mrs Bredjor Okoro, narrating what transpired, said, the protesters went on a rampage destroying and vandalising First, Access and Union commercial banks’ assets at the Express Junction, Udu Road, Delta State.

“Everywhere is on fire; First, Union and Access Banks buildings were burnt down by protesters over the naira crisis. At the moment, two people have been killed from trail bullets by Police officers deployed to contain the situation”, she stated.

Contacted, the Delta State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr Bright Edafe, said claims that people were killed during the protest is untrue.

He said, “Yes, there was a protest in the Udu Road area of Delta State. Our men were deployed immediately, and normalcy is returning to the place.

“Two commercial banks, Access and Union Banks, were burnt down and two Corolla Vehicles were burnt down.”

Similarly, protest has erupted in Akure, the Ondo State capital, over the refusal of commercial banks to receive old naira notes from customers as well as pay out new notes.

The protest began at the First Bank, Alagbaka by angry customers who had waited for several hours without being attended to.

NIGERIACRIME gathered that other banks in Akure have shut businesses to avoid being attacked.
